The Irlen Method involves the use of coloured overlays and Irlen Spectral Filters worn as glasses and contact lenses which have been shown to eliminate the effects of visual stress and visual fragmentation. This technology can improve reading fluency, comfort, comprehension, attention and concentration while reducing light sensitivity. This is not a method of reading instruction. It is a colour-based technology that filters out the offensive light waves, so the brain can accurately process visual information. Everyone’s brain is different and the key to success is determining the exact colour needed.
Coloured tinted lenses provided by others are not the same as Irlen Spectral Filters provided by the Irlen Method. Only certified Irlen Diagnosticians are trained to determine the specific frequencies to optimise performance from an almost limitless selection of filters.
The Irlen Method is a non-invasive, patented technology that uses colored overlays and filters to improve the brain’s ability to process visual information. It is the only method scientifically proven to successfully correct the processing problems associated with Irlen Syndrome.

Sue has been a firm believer in the Irlen Method since becoming an Irlen Screener in 2006. As a teacher working in the Special Educational Needs department of a large secondary school before retirement, she has screened students of all ages and abilities, from the gifted and talented to those less able, quickly finding that Irlen screening provided the simplest, quickest and most effective difference she could make in removing their personal learning barrier.
Irlen Syndrome is essentially sensitivity to wavelengths of light which causes difficulty in visual perception. This can cause distortions to be seen in pages of text making reading inefficient or impossible and either way, exhausting. Consequently, learning suffers and self-confidence can be dented.
Diagnosing Irlen is often a revelation in itself to someone and to their family. Helping students to select and use Irlen overlays means that they are then able to read more fluently and with greater enjoyment, comprehend effectively and so more readily access the school curriculum. Their ensuing success and improved self-esteem can be life changing!
